Altar means “an elevated sacrificial altar”, not something related to sheep)). This is just a random coincidence of sound. In ancient times, sacrifices were made (and not only in Christianity) not only of sheep, but also of goats, bulls, pigeons — therefore the language does not associate the name of the altar with a specific animal. Interesting beginning, I'll buy the book.
