In Search of Work

Lika had always been the kind of girl who stumbled into trouble. From the time she accidentally broke her teacher’s pen as a kid to her recent tumble into a fountain on a first date, her life was a series of comedic mishaps. Now, fresh out of college, she decided it was time to land a job, but every attempt ended in failure.

Sitting in a cozy café with her friends, Olya and Sasha, Lika scrolled through job listings on her phone. Every new posting boiled down to “experience required,” and the ones that didn’t demanded something like “office cleaning assistant.”

“Hey, do you remember that interview at the towel sales company where you claimed you had experience in ‘selling dreams’?” Olya teased with a smirk. “I still can’t get over how the manager just bolted out of the room!”

“And I can’t forget when you tried to get a job at that IT firm and said ‘dream programming’ instead of just ‘programming’!” Sasha chimed in, barely holding back a grin. “Then you actually tried to explain how that works!”

Lika sighed, the memories of her flops flooding back. “But I was just trying to show I can think outside the box! Honestly, I don’t get why I keep getting rejected everywhere. Maybe I’m just not cut out for this world!”

“Maybe you should try something offbeat,” Olya suggested with a playful nudge. “Like getting a gig at an advertising agency! Hey, they value creative types there.”

Lika, having had a bit too much to drink, felt a spark of excitement ignite within her. “Why not? You think I can’t do it? Pick an agency, and I’ll bet you I’ll land a job there within a week!” she declared, not fully grasping what she was signing up for. Her friends burst into laughter, exchanging knowing glances, but Lika was dead set on proving herself.

“Alright then,” Olya said with a grin. “If you’re so confident, go for ‘Brilliant Ideas.’”

“No problem!” Lika shot back with bravado. Meanwhile, she had no idea that ‘Brilliant Ideas’ was the biggest agency in town, a place where only the best of the best got hired.

The next morning, Lika woke up with a pounding headache and a sinking feeling that something was off. The bet replayed in her mind. “A bet? I was kidding!” she thought, but her pride wouldn’t let her back out.

“Fine, if I made a promise, I’ve gotta follow through!” she resolved, splashing cold water on her face. Luckily, ‘Brilliant Ideas’ had an open position. It seemed Olya had spotted it on a job search site and picked the agency on purpose, knowing full well Lika wouldn’t stand a chance. This wasn’t some fly-by-night operation. Lika called and scheduled an interview, and soon enough, the big day arrived.

She slipped into her best—but outdated—suit, the same one she’d worn on that disastrous first date, and headed to the advertising agency ‘Brilliant Ideas.’

Stepping into the agency’s lobby, Lika was struck by the vibe of creativity and chaos. The walls were decked out with vibrant posters, and the air buzzed with inspiration. She was immediately greeted by a cheerful, if slightly quirky, HR manager named Irina.

“Hey there! Are you new, or do you already work here?” Irina asked, watching as Lika nervously took in the surroundings.

“I… I’m here for an interview,” Lika stammered, trying to project confidence even as her heart raced like crazy.

“Great, come on in.” Then the formal part began. Irina seemed to switch gears, her tone turning professional as she addressed Lika more formally.

“Why do you want to work with us?” Irina asked with a polite smile.

Lika gathered her thoughts. “Well, I’ve always been fascinated by advertising. I believe creativity is what makes the world a brighter place!” she exclaimed, striving to sound self-assured.

Irina nodded, though her expression grew more serious. “Can you give examples of your creative ideas?”

“Of course! For instance, I came up with a campaign idea for… uh, let’s say, a company that makes eco-friendly bags. How about a slogan like ‘Carry Nature with You!’?” Lika blurted out, adrenaline pumping. “Or maybe run a promotion where anyone who brings in an old plastic bottle gets a discount on a new bag!”

Irina smiled faintly but pressed on. “What are your skills with graphic design software?”

“Um… I know how to use Photoshop, but mostly for editing photos, not so much for creating ads,” Lika admitted, feeling her confidence start to slip. “But I’m a fast learner!”

“That’s good to hear, but at our company, we expect interns to already have a certain level of expertise,” Irina said, shaking her head slightly. “We maintain a serious environment here, and we can’t afford to take on amateurs.”

Lika felt her heart sink. “I can learn, I promise!” she insisted, trying to keep up a brave front. “I’m super creative and willing to work hard on myself!”

“You do show potential,” Irina said, her tone measured. “But we’re looking for people with experience. This isn’t just an internship; it’s a chance to join a team that handles major clients.”

Leaving the office, Lika felt disappointment wash over her. But as she walked down the hallway, she stumbled upon an unexpected scene: the assistant to the head of the promotions department had apparently broken her leg and urgently needed a replacement.

Seizing the opportunity, Lika rushed back to Irina. “Maybe I could help out? I’m willing to step in as an assistant temporarily until you find a replacement!”

Irina looked surprised at first. “But… you don’t have any experience!”

“I learn fast, and this could be a great opportunity for me!” Lika pleaded, sensing this was her last shot.

Irina hesitated but ultimately declined. “I’m sorry, but we’re looking for someone with experience. This is a serious role, and we need professionals.”

Disheartened, Lika headed home. But that evening, her phone suddenly rang. Seeing the agency’s number, her heart started racing again as she picked up.

“Hi, this is Irina from ‘Brilliant Ideas.’ We discussed your application, and if you’re still interested, we’d like to bring you on!”

Lika couldn’t believe her ears. “Really? I’m in! Thank you!” she exclaimed, feeling hope flood back into her heart.

She knew that new adventures, laughter, and maybe even love awaited her. For now, though, she was ready for whatever this new job would throw her way.
